In reply to nicky. The problem of conservative Islam is fairly recent. Imo it can be blamed almost entirely on Saudi money. They got rich from oil and used it to spread Wahhabism. We're suffering the fallout from this.

I have said it before, and will say it again. The problem is Islam itself. It appears notoriously nearly hermetically closed -never mind Mr Nawaz’s efforts- to any kind of doubt, criticism or enlightenment.
I read (and was read) the Bible, and it was instrumental in me becoming an ateist. It is a totalitarian, evil compilation.
The Islamic trilogy (Qur’an, Hadith and Syrah) is worse, almost incomparably worse. About everything you do not like in Christianity is squared in Islam.
I have very little hope for Bangla Desh, (and for Europe, I fear it is a lost case too).
It should not be a ‘worry of the week’, but a ‘worry of the century’, immo.

Yes, atrocities happen all over the world from religious tensions, racial tensions, political tensions, etc. Though it is a false equivalency to compare the Bangladeshi murder(s) (and other murders for apostates) with the US murders you cited. I was specifically ranting about being killed for what one believes in (or doesn't believe in) metaphysically. Respectfully, your examples are outside that frame. I'm not saying that it could never happen here, but until I'm fearful of writing that I'm an atheist on a web site, I will stand by my original point that it's a hell of a lot safer to live in the US as an atheist than most (all?) Islamic theocracies.

This is a terrible thing, but in the US murders are a daily occurrence. Nine people were killed in a church in South Carolina because they were black. Others are killed because they are kids. Cops kill people on a regular basis. We send our kids off to be killed invading countries for the benefit of the plutocracy. Parents and other church members beat their kids to death if they question their religion. Martin Luther King was assassinated for working for racial justice. Catholic hospitals refuse abortions to save the mother’s life. We send non-violent drug offenders to prison to be raped and abused. I’m not saying we shouldn’t object to this string of murders, just replying to Mark’s comment that nothing happens here to compare with Bangladeshi horror.

This brings perspective to my US political woes. No matter how bad it gets here with the Plutocracy rising, it is nothing in comparison to this Bangladesh horror. I could definitely be killed for my interpretation of reality if I were placed in an Islamic theocracy. Is it really 2015? It’s hard to wrap my mind around these religion-based atrocities. It’s as dumb as people who believe in a flat earth killing those who know the earth is round. I don’t care what others believe, but why kill (KILL!) someone who believes differently? So so so so dumb. Happy Halloween.
